A $124,155 federal grant will enable the Oakdale Volunteer Fire
Co. to purchase Scott Air Packs, breathing apparatus that
firefighters carry on their backs when they enter burning buildings,
and to either upgrade or replace such rescue tools as the Jaws of
Life.
Oakdale Fire Chief Gary Murphy said the air packs the department
is now using are 15 years old and that replacing them would have
cost the town an estimated $65,000.
In addition to the Oakdale company, fire departments in East
Brooklyn, Willimantic, Killingworth and Ridgefield will share a
total of more than $428,000 in funding through the Assistance to
Firefighters Grant program. Since June, the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security has released more than $619 million to 7,800 paid
and volunteer fire departments throughout the country.
